A big thanks to PBSC graduate Danielle Mitchell who presented 3 workshops for current PBSC students. Danielle attended the Pratt Institute in New York and has worked at large and small ad agencies. She now commands her own design firm Chelley Creative. The faculty and students are still buzzing about her presentation. Well done Danielle!

Urban Art

If you are a Palm Beach State Art Dept., Lake Worth fan on facebook you might have seen the recent post on Street Art in London.

Most my students know that I am here in London for an art exhibition at SDC Gallery. Today I walked around the East End of London (near Brick Lane) looking for Urban or Street Art. Here is a piece you might enjoy. It is actually carved into the side of the building. The white is the surface of the wall and the colored parts are carved away revealing the stone below.

If urban art is your thing (because I definitely love it) you may be interested in one of my favorite books London Street Art Anthology.

And remember to respect the property of others, you can make urban art inspired art on canvas. Afterall, if it is good enough for Banksy it's good enough for you.

Lake Worth Graphic Design Student Sarah Nastri Exhibition: Broken Landscapes

After completing high school, Sarah Nastri began her college education at Palm Beach State. Moving to Los Angeles she expanded her art experience and education until she eventually moved back to Florida to finish her degree at The University of Central Florida, graduating with a BFA specializing in printmaking. Sarah is now continuing her education at Palm Beach State, taking courses in web design classes.

When asked about her work, Sarah states:
"art and creativity are an important part of who I am. I love the challenge in finding new and exciting materials and techniques to add to the diversity of my portfolio. My art has always been a personal experience. I feel a close relationship to my pieces as they develop.

Family is a strong inspiration and consistent theme throughout my developing work. I combine landscape and architecture to portray surreal spaces. The use of imagery from new and old family photographs is incorporated through the use of various media to create balanced compositions.

My use of overlapping images and color create compelling pieces that manly focus on the aesthetics of printmaking. Working with color and creating texture brings the flat surfaces alive."

Sarah's solo exhibition Broken Landscapes is a collection of prints, mixed media and wall sculpture at The Eissey Campus Theatre, 3160 PGA Blvd., Palm Beach Gardens. February 24th- April 6th.

Opening Reception: The Highwaymen at Lake Worth Campus

In Celebration of Black History Month The Division of Humanities Presents a Selection of Paintings from the Florida Highwaymen. The following excerpt was taken from the Highwaymen Paintings website and provides a brief synopsis of the work.

"During the early 1950’s through the 1980’s a group of twenty-six African-American artists known as the "Florida Highwaymen" used vivid and bright colors to display the beautiful untouched Florida landscape.

The Florida Highwaymen painted wind-bent palm trees, serene sunsets, churning oceans and bright red Poinciana trees. They painted from their garages and back yards on inexpensive Upson board and then on the weekends they would travel and sell their Highwaymen paintings to hotels, offices, businesses and individuals who appreciated the artwork for around $25 a piece.

Collecting Florida Highwaymen art has become an exciting, but often expensive, hobby. The market for an original work of art by a Florida Highwayman can easily bring $5,000 or more. Some of the Highwaymen who are still living have resumed painting to meet the continuing demand for their work."
