Opening Reception: The Highwaymen at Lake Worth Campus

In Celebration of Black History Month The Division of Humanities Presents a Selection of Paintings from the Florida Highwaymen. The following excerpt was taken from the Highwaymen Paintings website and provides a brief synopsis of the work.

"During the early 1950’s through the 1980’s a group of twenty-six African-American artists known as the "Florida Highwaymen" used vivid and bright colors to display the beautiful untouched Florida landscape.

The Florida Highwaymen painted wind-bent palm trees, serene sunsets, churning oceans and bright red Poinciana trees. They painted from their garages and back yards on inexpensive Upson board and then on the weekends they would travel and sell their Highwaymen paintings to hotels, offices, businesses and individuals who appreciated the artwork for around $25 a piece.

Collecting Florida Highwaymen art has become an exciting, but often expensive, hobby. The market for an original work of art by a Florida Highwayman can easily bring $5,000 or more. Some of the Highwaymen who are still living have resumed painting to meet the continuing demand for their work."

We hope to see you at the opening tonight from 5-7 pm.

Help for Haiti

Faculty, students and staff are all concerned with the people of Haiti, if you want to help but aren't sure of how or where, the Red Cross and the United Nations Central Emergency Fund are two good options. No amount is too small and your donations can be put into action in as little as three hours after making a contribution. Keep the people of Haiti in your thoughts and if you know someone with family or friends with ties to Haiti, talk to them and help if you can.

The Town of Lake Park is having an event “ Art on Park Festival” and they are seeking to have their first event poster. The town thought it would be beneficial to have the participation of some local college students on this 1st Art Festival. It is a great opportunity for building your portfolio and great exposure if selected.

The winner will receive a prize towards grants for their arts. The event is on March 27th & 28th 2010. Therefore we need to speed up the process in order to have all materials in time for the event. If you are interested please contact Jennifer Spicer.
